Removing Old Trim

Use the utility knife to cut the old trim away from the wall if necessary.  Cut the extension jams free from the window, while trying to not cut the window.  Cut where the fame trim connects to the extension jams.   Using a hammer and small pry bar insert pry bar between the face trim and extension jam.  Pry the face trim away from the extension jam and wall.  Go slowly and make sure the trim is not pulling the paint off from the wall.  If it starts to do so, cut the paint or caulk with the utility knife.   Remove the apron trim piece under the window sill.  Once again make sure it has been cut free from the wall.  Place a putty knife against the wall and trim.  Place pry bar on top of putty knife and hammer under trim.  The putty knife shall protect the wall from damage from the pry bar.  Gently remove the apron.   The sill and extension jams might come out at this point if not nailed in.  If there are nails the pry bar can be used to pry the extension jams away from the framing.  Or you may use the nail set and drive the nails through the extension jams to free them from the framing.  Same procedure for the window sill.    Now that you have the extension jams off, measure again to see if your first extension jam width measurements were accurate.

Preparation

Preparing the Rough Opening

Remove any fiberglass insulation from around the window.  Next vacuum around the window to clean any debris.  Clean window edge area where the surround is to come in contact with.  Install painters tape to the window frame.  This shall protect the window from any spray foam which expands out from the sides of the window.  NOTE: USE NON EXPANDING FOAM ONLY.  Expanding spray foam will damage your door and/or window and make it impossible to open.  Wear safety goggles and gloves at all times!

Spraying Foam

Spray the NON-EXPANDING foam into the gap between the window and the framing members.

Fill the gap about half way or less.  Better to add less than too much spray foam.  Let the spray foam expand and harden.  Add more spray foam after hardening if desired.  If any expands on the painters tape let it harden before trying to remove it.  Once the foam is dry remove any access to allow the surround to sig against the window.

Final Assembly

Re-establish where you wish for the surround to sit against the window.  This would have been determined during the measuring stage.  Painters tape on each corner, or a pencil mark, can be a good reference point.   With the surround assembled, place the surround in the desired location. Using a second hand for the step is advised.   Drive a finish nail or trim screw through the predrilled holes at each corner.  Do not sink the finish nail or trim screw all the way into the trim until you double check the placement of the surround and you are satisfied where it sits.  If you are satisfied with the placement, install the remaining nails or trim screws.  Apply caulking to where the surround meets the window and where the surround meets the wall.
